Head of Foundation Stage & FS1 teacher - Carolyn Gorham
Carolyn studied English and the History of Art and Design at Loughborough University. After the completion of her degree Carolyn went on to study her PGCE, with a specialism in Early Years Education, at The Westminster Institute of Education, Oxford Brookes University. Carolyn’s first teaching post was in Oxford, teaching a mixed Year 1 and 2 Class. After three years Carolyn relocated to Stratford Upon Avon and became part of the Senior Management Team teaching in a Reception (Foundation 2) class in Warwick.
Key Stage 1 leader and Year 1 teacher - Jessica Hitchmough
Jessica graduated from Durham University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Education, specialising in English Language. She worked in a busy inner city London school for four years, teaching lower key stage two and key stage one. After a year of travelling around the world and a brief spell teaching back in the North West, where she grew up, she moved to Birmingham. Here, she taught at another vibrant multicultural school for three years before coming to DBS. She has also held the position of Science subject leader at her schools in the UK.

Key Stage 2 Leader and Year 5 teacher - Sheree Antioch
Sheree spent most her career in Hotel Management before having her daughter in 1987, when she decided to move into teaching. She gained her Bachelor of Education in London in 2000 and began her career at Hampstead Parochial C of E School completing seven years before moving to Dubai. Having worked in a large international school in Dubai for four Years, three of which have been in Year 6 and the final year as Year 6 Team Leader, she is now looking forward to a new challenge at DBS. Sheree is married to Greg and has a 23 year old daughter. When she’s not looking after them she has a real passion for travelling the globe and photographing it.

Director of Sport and Activities - Mick Wright
Mick has spent the last nine years in the teaching profession, specialising in Physical Education. Upon graduating from Liverpool John Moores University in 2001, with a BA Hons in Secondary Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status, Mick became Assistant Head of Department at Calderstone's School in Liverpool, where he worked for five years. Mick joined Dubai British School as a Physical Education teacher in August 2006. In August 2007 he was appointed Subject Leader for Physical Education and has gone on to become Head of Faculty. Mick has a genuine passion for sport and shares his enthusiasm with the motivated and diligent students of Dubai British School.
PE Teacher and Head of Key Stage 3 - Nick Clarke
Nick graduated from the University of Brighton in 2005 having studied a four year P.E. teaching degree, gaining a BA (Hons) with Qualified Teacher Status. His first teaching post was at a Specialist Sports College in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, where he taught students aged 11 to 18 for three years. He was the Key Stage 3 co-coordinator for Physical Education responsible for developing schemes of work and the assessment of pupils. Other duties included responsibility for school football and A2 coursework as well as contributing a lot of time to County and District football. Nick is very passionate about P.E. and has particular fondness for football, cricket, health related fitness and athletics. Away from teaching he can be usually be found playing and coaching football or visiting the gym.
PE Teacher and Head of Key Stage 4 - Emma Pennock
Emma gained a BSc in Physical Education and Sports Science at Loughborough University in June 2004. Emma stayed at Loughborough to complete the Post Graduate Certificate in Education specialising in Physical Education. On completion of this course in 2005 Emma was appointed as a Teacher of Physical Education at the Nottingham Bluecoat School and Technology College. Emma worked for three years at Bluecoat gaining the faculty responsibility position of Leader of the KS5 curriculum and pastoral responsibilities as Head of House and Achievement Mentor. Emma left the school in July 2008 to take up a position as Teacher of Physical Education at the Dubai British School.
PE Teacher - Alice Horton
Alice has been a Physical Education teacher for the past six years. After leaving York St John University where she gained a 2.1 in her chosen Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Physical Education and Psychology degree, she attended Leeds Metropolitan University to achieve her PGCE in Physical Education. Her first post was for girls PE at Howden Technology School where she taught for two years before moving to Dubai British School. Allce joined DBS in 2006.
PE Teacher - Sarah Carley
Sarah Carley graduated in 2002 from Brunel University, London, with a BSc Secondary Education and Physical Education with Geography degree. Her first teaching post was at Manor School Sports College in Nottinghamshire where she taught PE to pupils from 11 to 18 years old. A move south led to a PE Coordinator role at Edward Peake Middle School, Bedfordshire. After a year at the school, Sarah was appointed as the Assistant Key Stage 2 Coordinator. This was followed by a move to her birth place of Suffolk, to become a School Sports Coordinator in the Stowmarket Sports Partnership. Sarah was responsible for the increase in participation of high quality PE across 11 Primary schools and 2 Middle schools. Sarah’s decision to combine her desire to teach Primary PE with a move to Dubai, has resulted in her appointment at Dubai British School, where she hopes to share her passion and enthusiasm for PE with all pupils.
PE Teacher - Kerryanne Glynn
Kerryanne graduated from Edinburgh University in 2004, with a B.Ed degree in Physical Education. Her first teaching post was at Dunbar Grammar School in the south east of Scotland. She did this for 1 year before taking on a post as a visiting PE Specialist. As part of this role she was responsible for the delivery of PE in four different Primary schools, these ranged in size from 20 to 650 pupils. After three years in this job Kerryanne was ready for a new challenge and decided to travel to Dubai and further her career by taking up a post as Primary PE teacher at Dubai British School.
Primary PE Teacher - Andrew Grainger
Andrew graduated from Edge Hill University with a degree in Physical Education in 2008. With a keen love and passion for sport and physical activity, Andrew holds an extensive range of National Governing Body Awards in addition to his regular participation in sports such as football and rugby. After completing his teacher training programme in Physical Education, he began his career at Byrchall High School, Lancashire, as a teacher of PE and the School Sport Coordinator. During his time at Byrchall, he immersed himself in school life, playing a key role in the department, organising numerous events and competitions for pupils within the school, local community and feeder primary schools. His desire to develop his career further led him to Dubai British School and he is looking forward to introducing new ideas and concepts into the school and PE department. When he isn’t teaching, coaching or taking part in any form of sport, Andrew enjoys travelling and has a keen passion for music and film.

Art Teacher - Ka thryn Wilson
Kathryn graduated with a degree in Fine Art at Oxford University in 2004 before returning home to the Lake District to complete a PGCE in Secondary Art. An active painter and keen photographer she has six years teaching experience in Brunei, The Lake District and Dubai. Having spent her childhood living in the Middle East, Kathryn was drawn back to Dubai and now enjoys exploring the UAE and Oman in search of inspiration both for her teaching and large abstract paintings. Kathryn recently exhibited in Muscat with the Al Madina Gallery and she likes to develop schemes of work where her students can be inspired by other local artists.
Drama Teacher - Amy Garside
Amy graduated from Aberystwyth University with a BA (Hons) in Drama. After taking a year out to travel overseas, which included a brief spell working in Australia, she completed a PGCE at Durham University, graduating in 2003. Amy then took up two very different posts in the North East of England, one in a school deemed outstanding by Ofsted, the other in a school which catered for students suffering from emotional and behavioural difficulties. Amy welcomed the differing challenges that each provided. Before taking up her position in Dubai she was for four years Head of Drama in a mixed comprehensive school. Amy enjoys swimming, the theatre and the challenges and excitements of meeting people from different cultures.
Design Technology Teacher - Shereen El Rashed
Having graduated with a degree in Architecture from London Metropolitan University in the late 90s, Shereen went on to work in an Architectural office for several years before deciding to become a teacher. Once she completed her PGCE in 2005 at Greenwich University, She then taught Design Technology at the West London Academy for three years, specializing in graphics, before taking up her appointment at DBS in 2009. Shereen has held a variety of responsibilities, in her teaching career, including Acting Head of Year at West London and has run projects with Extended Schools in the UK which is a government initiative that helps provide facilities for children and their families in the school holidays. She has taught English to speakers of other languages, having recently completed a CELTA course.
Design Technology Teacher - Bridget Penrose-Lyall
Bridget graduated from Liverpool Polytechnic with a B. Ed degree in Design Technology in 1991 and ten years later she completed her MA in Educational Studies at Loughborough. She taught DT at Mosslands Schools on the Wirral in the early 90s, before joining The British School in Riyadh in 1995, where she was DT Curriculum Manager for ten years. She then moved to the British School of Bahrain where she introduced Design Technology from the time of her appointment in 2005. Bridget's interests include keeping fit, golf, skiing and dressmaking. She is an active guider (Brownies) and has lectured at the Royal University for Women in Bahrain, teaching fashion design.
Primary Music Teacher - Sara Lander
After completing a Bachelor of Music and Teaching (primary) at the University of Melbourne, Sarah Lander (a born and bred Aussie) worked for two years as an Early Years Primary School teacher. The next four years were a mixture of work and play as she taught in London and travelled whenever she could! After completing her Qualified Teacher Status, she returned home to Melbourne. However, after two years of working at a Primary School that ran both Victorian Primary and Montessori curricula she moved to Dubai. When she arrived in Dubai in January 2007 she spent the next three academic years as a general primary teacher and Classroom Music Specialist. Between leaving her previous post and commencing her role as Primary Music Teacher at DBS, Sarah has been a full time mum to 15 month old son and part-time flute teacher. She is looking forward to getting back into the classroom! |

Director of Educational Technology - Damien Griffiths
Graduating in 1992 with a Bachelor of Applied Science from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Damien taught secondary Science, Physical Education and Outdoor Education for the next 4 years in a small country town in the south of Australia. In 1997 Damien decided to travel the world for one year; however he enjoyed England so much that he stayed there for eight years. Teaching Science and ICT (too wet for PE!), Damien ended up Head of ICT in The Heathland School London for five years, as well as managing school reports and SIMs. Now residing in Dubai, Damien first taught at The School of Research Science for almost 2 years and since 2006 at Dubai British School as PE, ICT and Science teacher, along with managing the school information management system.
Teacher of ICT - Mark Wood
Mark graduated from the University of Lincoln in 2003 with a BA Hons in Interactive Multimedia; he then completed his PGCE in Secondary ICT at Nottingham Trent University the following year. His first teaching post was at South Wolds Community School in Keyworth; after two years he moved on to Arnold Hill School where he became Second in Department, responsible for developing and managing the Key Stage 3 curriculum for ICT. Having responsibilities for Primary to Secondary transition, Mark jumped at the chance to further his professional development by accepting the position of ICT Specialist at Kings’ Dubai School. After almost two years in this role and transforming the IT and ICT department to a level deemed as ‘Outstanding’ by the KHDA, Mark decided to follow his true passion and go back in to secondary education and joins DBS, where he also coordinates Primary ICT. |

Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies Teacher - Amneh Hijazi
Amneh graduated from Motah University, Jordan in 1994 and subsequently worked in Al Jahiz School as an Arabic and Islamic teacher for four years. She then moved to the UAE, working at the School of Research Science where she taught Years 4 to 7. Amneh joined DBS in 2007 as a teacher of Primary Arabic after a period at the Emirates National School in Abu Dhabi, where she won the award for exemplarary teaching in 2007.
Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies Teacher - Khloud Shmayleh
Khloud graduated from the University of Jordan in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts in Arabic, History and Philosophy. After graduating she worked in a Jordanian government school teaching Arabic history. After completing a Higher Diploma in School Management and with the desire to broaden her outlook she decided to move abroad and took up a position of a teacher at an international school in Sharjah. Here she taught Arabic for non Arabs as well as Social Studies to Arabs. One of the highlights of this period was in 2007 when she was presented with the ‘Board of Governors Teacher of the Year Award’. Her Arabic for non Arabic speakers IGCSE results were almost invariably 100% pass rate with many of those students gaining ‘A’s and ‘A*’s. In recognition of her experience and abilities she has been asked to prepare the Ministry Examination in Sharjah on more than one occasion. She was for many years in charge of the Helpers’ Society, a club dedicated to raising money for charity. In particular, with her help the students raised enough money to build a clinic in the Sudan and to sponsor more than 50 orphans worldwide. For Khloud teaching is not just a job but also her favourite pastime; in her own time she published a book specially for teaching Arabic communication skills to non Arab students. Any extra time is devoted to reading and sport.
Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies Teacher - Iba' Awni Masri
Iba’ gained a degree in Economics and Business Administration in 1989 from the University of Jordan and worked in this field for many years before changing career when she had her daughter. Iba’ took the Montessori program Diploma in 2000 and started her career in education with teaching special needs on one to one basis, then moving on to teach Arabic for Kingergarten students in a large nursery in Dubai. After three years Iba’ moved on to teach Arabic and Islamic Studies for non Arabic speaking students from Kindergarten up to Grade 6 where she taught with passion, particularly enjoying the progress and achievements of her students.
Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies Teacher - Rania Reda
Rania graduated from Cairo University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts, specializing in Arabic Language. She also completed a Bachelor of Arts in English in 2008. She worked for 4 years at Future Private School in Egypt, as an Arabic and Islamic Teacher for secondary classes. She relocated to Dubai in 2008, where she started working as an Arabic Teacher for Primary students She is now completing her Masters Degree in Education at the British University, Dubai.
Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies Teacher - Hala Bazna
Hala Bazna, Studied English literature at Damascus University, Syria. She began her career in Education at Al Bayan Bilingual School, Kuwait, as a Nursery Teacher’s assistant. During her 10 years there she held the positions of Nursery supervisor and Head Arabic teacher. In expanding her line of expertise, Hala worked with students with Learning Disabilities at Fawzia Al Sultan Learning Institute, Kuwait, as an Arabic and science teacher for one year. This was followed by a year’s stint as the school’s pre-academic, therapeutic program coordinator.
When Hala got married she moved with her husband to Riyadh and lived there for 15 years. During this time she obtained her teaching certificate as well as her Master’s in Education, from The College of New Jersey, USA.In Riyadh, Hala worked for 5 years as an Arabic Culture and Language teacher at the American International School of Riyadh (AIS-R); and until recently as a the K-G 3 coordinator and Arabic teacher at Advanced Learning schools, an IB, DB & PYP accredited school. Hala is very much looking forward to being a part of the DBS community.

Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies Teacher - Rana Kanaan
Rana got her Bachelor degree in Journalism-Mass Communication and Public Relations from Yarmouk University. She started her career at Al Quds Open Learning University as Assistant to the Director and Producer of TV educational Programmes. She joined the Federation of Jordanian Chambers of Commerce as Head the Information and Documentation Department. Rana extended her involvement in education and Teaching through her work at various International Schools such as Qatar Academy, Emirates International School and Dubai International Academy as teacher for Arabic and Islamic Studies. Throughout her career Rana participated in several training courses conducted by United Nations and the League for Arab States in Geneva and Tunisia and was a Youth Advisor Volunteer at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Youth volunteer programme. Rana is a Reikei master teaching meditation for adults and values for children. |
